Election of a Guardian for Walton-le-Dale

ELECTION OF A GUARDIAN FOR WALTON-LE-DALE.
-In consequence of the death of Mr. Gardner, a vacancy was created in the representation of Walton-le-Dale at the Preston Board of Guardians. The pressure of work-mainly in connection with the Sanitary Authority-falling upon Mr. H. Snape, the other representative, induced the Board three weeks ago to apply to the Local Government Board for an order for an immediate election. This order was sent down, and the last day for nominations was Wednesday last. The gentlemen proposed for the seat were Mr. T. Strickland, of Mains House, Walton-le-Dale, farmer; Mr. John Brown, Bamber Bridge, agent; and Mr. Joseph Atkinson, Church-street, Preston, tailor and draper. Mr. Atkinson resigned, and owing to an in-formality in all the nominations of Mr. Brown, there was no alternative for the clerk but to declare Mr. Strickland duly elected. Yesterday Mr. Dizon, the clerk to the Board, issued the following:-“Preston Union.-I do hereby certify that the election of a guardian of the poor for the township of Walton-le-Dale, in the room of Mr. Richard Gardner, deceased, was conducted in conformity with the order of the Local Government Board, and that Mr. James Strickland, of Mains House, Walton-le-Dale, farmer, was duly elected guardian of the said township. GEORGE DIXON, Union Clerk.” Had there not been an informality in the voting papers of Mr. Brown, the voting papers would have been issued and collected on the 17th inst.
