The first reference I can find to the workhouse is in the Preston Chronicle newspaper that was published on Saturday, 19th March, 1831. It is the recording of a death that seems quite remarkable given the circumstances.

On Monday, last, at Walton Workhouse, aged 93, Margery-Woodruffe, formerly of this town [Preston].
