WALTON-LE-DALE AND BAMBER BRIDGE.

A MAIDEN SESSION. At the Walton-le-Dale Petty Sessions yesterday, before Messrs. J. Eccles and H. Calvert, the only business was the temporary transfer of the license of the Pear Tree Inn, Bamber Bridge, from Richard Raby to William Garlick.

THE WHITSUNTIDE HOLIDAYS. All the mills in the neighbourhood of Bamber Bridge will stop to-day for three days for Whitsuntide. The operatives at the mills have been canvassed with regard to having 10 days’ holiday each year, and as soon as the result is known, a petition will be submitted to the employers.

BAMBER BRIDGE CRICKET CLUB. The Bamber Bridge Cricket Club were defeated on Saturday by St. Mary’s, at Moor Park, although only by a very small majority, the scores being St. Mary’s 41, Bamber Bridge 38. For the winners Pearson scored 20, while Sharples got 14 for the visitors.

OPEN AIR TEMPERANCE MEETING. -On Monday evening an open air temperance meeting was held under the auspices of the Bamber Bridge Wesleyan Band of Hope Society. The chair was occupied by Mr. Sutton, who delivered a very eloquent discourse on the advantages of total abstinence. The other speakers were Messrs. L. A. Tempest, S. Durham, and C. Waddington. At the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman and others.

SHOCKING ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY.-On Saturday evening a shocking accident befel a man named Edward Armstrong, a resident of Bamber Bridge. Whilst walking along the line from Preston Junction to his home his foot was caught in the metals, and before he could extricate himself a train ran over his leg, and otherwise badly injured him. He was taken to the Preston Infirmary, where it was found necessary to amputate his leg, just below the knee.

LOSTOCK HALL UNITED METHODISTS.-A concert in aid of reducing the debt consequent on purchase of the organ for the Lostock Hall United Methodist Free Church was given in the schoolroom on Saturday evening last. The chair was occupied by Mrs. Ainsworth, who made a short but stirring address. An excellent programme, consisting of songs and duets, was capitally gone through by Mesdames Slater, Openshaw, Misses Lee, P. Forshaw, B. Buckley, Livesey, Ainsworth, E. Ainsworth, M. Parker, Firth, Nixon, Fisher, Newton, A. Smith, Simm, A. Soutt, M. E. Smith, and Goodier. At the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to all who had contributed towards the success of the entertainment.

A DISHONEST LODGER. At the Bamber Bridge Police-court, on Monday, before Messrs. J. Eccles and H. Dewhurst, a middle aged woman named Elizabeth McDonald, hailing from Wigan, was charged with stealing a dress skirt and other articles of wearing apparel, the property of Elizabeth Ferryman, of Brook-street. Higher Walton. On Friday, the 20th ult., prisoner went to reside with the prosecutrix, and left the following Monday, taking the articles with her. They were worth about 10s.-P.C. Clarke found that prisoner had pawned part of the stolen property with Mr. Moore, pawnbroker, of London-road, Preston. He traced the prisoner to Wigan, where he apprehended her. She was committed to gaol for 14 days.

PRESENTATIONS AT SCHOOL LANE. On Saturday afternoon a deputation from the teachers and scholars of St. Aiden’s Sunday School, School Lane, waited on Mr. James Birkenhead, of Church-lane, Bamber Bridge, for the purpose of presenting him with a handsomely-bound Bible and a writing case, in appreciation of his services as superintendent of the above school for three years. Mr. Birkenhead succeeded his father, who was the first superintendent of the school, and ably discharged his duties until his death, which took place after 14 years’ faithful service. Miss Wainwright, of Birch House, Walton-le-Dale, made the presentation, and the recipient replied to the generosity of the donors in a few well-chosen words. Afterwards, the party proceeded to the residence of Mr. Renwick, schoolmaster of Farington Schools, and presented him with a beautiful dressing case, in recognition of his services as schoolmaster of School-lane School, until his appointment as successor to the late Mr. Payne, who met with so untimely a death whilst spending his midsummer vacation at Ingleton last year.
