The Monthly Meeting of this Board

WALTON-LE-DALE LOCAL BOARD. The monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Board Offices, Withy Trees, Trees, Walton-le-Dale, on Monday afternoon.
The members present were-Messrs. R. J. Flowerdew, J.P. (in the chair), Baldwin, Greenwood, J. Eccles, J.P. Ingham, Longworth, Aspden and Calvert.
Highway Committee. At a meeting of the Highway Committee, held on the 31st ult., bills amounting to £95 14s 3d were recommended for payment. It was resolved that the clerks be instructed to write to the Clerk of Peace, complaining of the bad state of Walton Cop road and footpath, and asking if it was possible for some arrangement to be made to enable the Local Board to undertake in future to repair all this road.
Finance Committee. A meeting of this committee was held on the same day. Bills amounting to £621 7s 1d were recommended for payment.
Health of the District. At a meeting of the General Purposes Committee. held on the 31st ult., the following report of the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. Trimble) was submitted: –
“During the month ending the 22nd ult. there were recorded 38 births and 16 deaths; of the former, 22 are males and 16 females. In estimating the proportion of the births and deaths to the population, I have followed the instructions received at your last meeting, which would give a population in your district of 10,740, or an increase since the census of 1881 of 1454. This, I should say, will be nearly correct, and gives a birth-rate for the year in each thousand of 42.39, and death rate of 17.87. Three deaths took place under one year old, four one and under five, three 25 and under 60, six 60 and upwards. The greatest age was seventy-one. One death was caused by scarlatina (Scarlet fever), one by diarrhoea-both in Bamber Bridge-two by heart disease, four by diseases of the respiratory organs, one by accidentally scalding, and seven were classed as having occurred from “all other diseases.” Several cases of typhoid fever have come to our knowledge during the month, but the greater proportion are of a mild form. Your nuisance inspector has supplied disinfectants, and given all necessary instructions. The disease is altogether
located at Bamber Bridge. In only one instance has it appeared in the same house as last year, and some of the cases are in perfectly now houses fitted fitted with all the sanitary improvements required by the Board. The second outbreak in my opinion clearly points to the saturated condition of the village from sewage.” -The minutes of the various committees wore confirmed.-There was no other business, and the Board adjourned.

“ult.” is an abbreviation of ultimo (mense) — Latin for “of the previous month.”
